Ave Sol
The construction of Riga's Ave Sol Concert Hall, or Peter and Paul Church, started in 1778 based on a design project by architects Z. Zege and K.Haberland. It is located in the so-called citadel area.
The Early Classical-style church was modeled after the orthodox church in Parnu. The building features a typical orthodox church plan with an attached tower and central dome.
In 1836, the Peter and Paul Church became a cathedral, the first one in the Baltic governorate. In the second half of the 19th century two orthodox priests were buried here - Bishop Benjamins and Bishop Filafets.
In 1987, the building was renovated and re-organised as a concert hall in accordance with the project of architect E.Mengele and was named Ave Sol. The interior design features a partially renovated wall and ceiling paintings from the 19th century.
