Riga Circus presented its first show on 29 December 1888. However, the building was publicly much discussed long before its opening as it featured railway metals (rails) in the construction. The director Alberts Salamonskis and architect Jānis Fridrihs Baumanis had created a unique building with a visually light, yet enormously durable dome. Salmanovskis is also behind circus buildings in Moscow and Berlin.
During many decades, the edifice underwent reconstruction, yet the basic principles have been preserved. 1n 1940 the circus was named The State Circus of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 2003 Riga Circus building was listed among the architectural monuments of national importance. The research carried out confirms that the quality of rails is good and the old circus will be operational for many years.
Performances in Riga Circus are all year round, though traditionally the winter season is the most important. Shows feature local artists and guest performers from various countries. On the bill - also concerts and film screenings.
