Cesis

On the banks of the Gauja River in NE Latvia, Cesis is the second largest town in Vidzeme Province and since July 1, 2009, is the Cesis Region centre. Established in 1206. It is the third oldest town in Latvia. In 1323 Cesis acquired the rights of a city. A medieval castle, old part of the town with its street system and brick and wooden buildings, old wooden townhouses and manors - all of them feature Cesis. The town has 32 state and 114 local cultural and historical monuments and 71 state preserved cultural monuments.
