Daugavpils Theatre

Theatre in Latgale has existed since the mid-19th century. The Russian Drama Theater - the first Russian theatre in Latvia - was privately established in 1854 (according to some sources in 1856) in Dinaburg, and was maintained by Nikolajs Hagelstroms, the senior engineer of Daugavpils fortress. In 1858 the theater gave successful guest performances in Riga.

Many guest directors have staged productions at the Daugavpils Theatre - Mihail Mamedov (Moscow), Semjon Losev (Moscow), Fēliks Deičs (Valmiera), Ivars Lūsis (Liepāja), Anna Eižvertiņa (Riga), Diāna Ramanoviča (Riga), Alexey Isakov (Sankt Peterburg), Egidins Mažintas (Lithuania), Raymond Godefroy (France), Jakovs Rafalsons (Riga), Jānis Kaijaks (Riga), Arnis Ozols (Riga) and others. The theatre is regularly invited to many festivals, and has visited the USA, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Egypt, Belgium, Germany and others. Every month it goes on Latvian tour.
