Riga, the Latvian capital, is the key industrial, commercial, financial and cultural centre of the Baltics, and an important port city. Riga has 709,145 residents, making it the biggest city in the Baltics and the third biggest city (after St. Petersburg and Stockholm) in the Baltic Sea region (by number of residents within the city limits). It covers an area of 307,17 square kilometres. Riga City accommodates only one third of the total residents, while the whole Riga agglomeration (the city plus its suburbs) is home to 0.94 million people, or almost half of the Latvian nation. Riga's historic centre is famous for its Art Nouveau buildings and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Riga will be one of European Cultural Capitals in 2014.
