Žanis Lipke provided safe haven for 50 Jews during World War II, and this memorial is a tribute to his heroism. The memorial itself is a 12-meter long, six-meter high wall supported by columns with the names of 270 people, who risked their lives. On the central column - a portrait of Lipke.

From 1941 to 1945 more than 70 000 Jews were slaughtered in Latvia. More than 400 Jews were saved thanks to people of various nationalities, social status, political views and religion. The monument has an inscription of the prophet Isaiah's words: "I'll confer permanent honors on them that will never be revoked" (56:6). The Memorial was unveiled on July 4, 2007, next to the symbolic ruins of Great Choral Synagogue that was burned down along with the people inside in 1941.
