Bank of Latvia turns Christmas tree into money tree

The Christmas tree has not only symbolic, but also material value. Celebrating the 500th anniversary of the very first decorated Christmas tree, set up in Riga’s Town Hall Square, the Bank of Latvia has issued a commemorative coin.

The coin featuring a Christmas tree is a unique souvenir that will remind you of your stay in the city that first saw a decorated Christmas tree, honoring the birth of Jesus.

The coins were emitted at the end of last year, during the Christmas season. The nominal value of the silver commemorative coin is LVL 1 (EUR 1.43). However, it is not meant for tender, it is a collectible and souvenir. It has been designed in the framework of European Union commemorative coins program “European Heritage”, and can be purchased at bank branches in Latvia. At the cashier's office of the Bank of Latvia (K.Valdemara Street 2a, Riga) the coin costs LVL 23.10 (EUR 33). Also other commemorative coins issued by the Bank of Latvia can be obtained there.

The obverse of the coin depicts a man carrying a small fir-tree. A squirrel and a shining moon are also illustrated on the obverse. The reverse features mummers in traditional masks (that of a horse, buck, crane and bear).

In addition, the Bank of Latvia has also emitted a one-lat circulation coin “Christmas Tree” (“Eglite”). A Christmas tree is depicted on the reverse of the new.  On the obverse, just like on all other coins, the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia is displayed. If you are lucky, you can get the coin as change in the shop or by making any other payments in cash.
