Courtesy of the Latvian national airline “airBaltic”, “BalticBike” – the first self-service bicycle rental in the Baltics, has opened in the heart of Riga – Town Hall Square.

Riga Mayor Nils Ušakovs, who revealed that he is an avid bike rider, took part in the grand opening event.

Bertolt Flick, “airBaltic” President and CEO: “Every decent European city has bike rental stands. We are glad to launch the first “BalticBike” stand in Riga following the successful launch of “BalticBike” rental service in Jurmala. Now residents and guests of Riga will also have a chance to enjoy summer in the city by using rental bikes.”

The first “BalticBike” opened in the seaside resort Jurmala June 21. Easily accessible by car or train from Riga, the two cities are connected also by an excellent bike path.

Rental numbers in the first week in Jurmala show that the service is highly popular. During the recent Midsummer holidays, only a few bikes remained un-rented out of the fleet of 100.
