Medieval revival in Zaķusala

On September 4 and 5, Zaķusala in the very heart of Riga will be the venue for fights between the Brothers of the Sword and a place where the medieval atmosphere will come back to life – its songs, ancient handicrafts and lifestyle.

The international folklore, ancient craft and battle festival "Baltic Sun 2010" will take place for two days on the Daugava island between the Television Building and Railway Bridge. This year's event will gather together participants from the Baltic Sea region, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

The festival is dedicated to the historical Battle of Saule, which took place on September 22, 1236, where Lithuanians and Latvians gained a victory over the Order of the Brothers of the Sword. This is the only such festival representing the ancient history of Latvia, and it has taken place in Riga since 1997.

Up until sunrise, visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy the great diversity of the ancient lifestyle – ancient handicrafts, various competitions, clothing of those times or simply the ancient atmosphere, observing Semigallians and Lithuanians doing battle and gaining victory over the Order of the Brothers of the Sword. Visitors will be able to take a horse ride, see a viking boat up close, and other interesting activities.
