Narrow and winding Laipu Street was set up in the 13th century as St. Francis Monastery was established there. In the beginning, the street stretched to the city wall. Today, it is located in the very heart of the city, and it is surrounded by several art galleries

Several art galleries and salons are now located on Laipu Street, which is one of the smallest Old Town streets, right off Līvu Square. Among them are "Žagatas Martas bode" featuring unusual jewelry and vintage clothing, "Stikla galerija" with glass art of latest technique, "Sāmsalas kalēji" - metal-works with a historic feel, and "artGocha" Gallery with its colourful and joyful paintings, installations and graphics.
