"The Heiress of Vilkači" tells about hatred among neighbours, about love and wisdom. Two families - the Dievlodziņi (God's Little Windows) and Vilkači (Werewolfs)- have long lived next each other, albeit with hatred. Disaster follows disaster at the Dievlodziņi, while the Vilkači successfully develop. The first family accuses the other of witchcraft. But the Vilkači live according to the laws of nature and ancient tradition. The situation is further complicated when the Dievkociņi's son falls in love with the young Vilkači landlady.
Latvian writer Ilona Neimane's novel "The Heiress of Vilkači" was published in 1944, just a few months before the German Wehrmacht retreated and the Russian Army entered Riga. Neimane went into exile and the novel was forbidden. Today, the novel is among the compulsory texts in schools; a movie with the same title was produced in 1990.
Bruno Skulte, while in exile, composed the work in Oldenburg (Germany) in 1947, shortly before his departure for the USA. The opera was staged in Latvia only once, on Skulte's 100th anniversary.
The new production is directed by Ināra Slucka; the cast: Dana Bramane, Andris Ludvigs, Raimonds Bramanis, Inga Šļubovska, Armands Siliņš, Krišjānis Norvelis and other soloists of the Latvian National Opera. Conductor - Andrejs Jansons and Aigars Meri.
