Grand Concert of Latvian Symphonic Music

A great opportunity to get to know the symphonic music of Latvian composers. Every year the most famous works, as well as premieres of Latvian composers, are performed at the concert by highly professional orchestras. This year: the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Atvars Lakstīgala, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (conductor Guntis Kuzma), the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (conductor Modestas Pitrėnas) and soloist Kristaps Bergs (cello).

Multi-media performance Patterns of Light

21 Jan
One of the opening events of Latvia's centenary celebration will be a special contemporary multi-media stage performance about the nation's roots, it people and itself. The producers have created a colorful world in this musical, spacial and plot-related performance, where the main role is given to Latvia's nature and how people perceive and live together with it. The performance stage will be the whole first floor of the Latvian National Library, which will feature kinetic objects, light beams, projections, as well as movements by actors. At the same time, the audience will have the opportunity to move around and view the performance from different viewpoints.

The production of "Le Nozze di Figaro" will offer the inhabitants of the city, and probably also its visitors, to get to know with the famous Argentinean director and artistic director of Teatro Colon, Marcelo Lombardero, whose productions have been highly appraised by audiences and critics in South America and Europe. The production of Mozart's opera in the Latvian National Opera has been produced in the 1980s Latin American soap opera style, by creating an atmosphere full of exotic, social and erotic tension.

Christmas-tree decorations and toys come to life, and Maria's dreams begin to come true. Everything happens exactly as befits Christmas Eve, though the tone is set by the rules and forms of classical ballet.

It’s a story about the events of 1620, during which the protagonists continue to live out their passions – a story that moved conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš and director Ināra Slucka to portray this melodious drama as a timeless legend about Maija’s love and loyalty.

Ballet "At the Blue Danube"

The beautiful music of “waltz king” Johann Strauss inspired a romantic ballet about the choice between love and the stage, dreams and reality. An der schönen blauen Donau was first performed in Riga in 1957; in the 60 years since, it has been revived numerous times and has become one of the cornerstones of the Latvian Ballet. This new production is in celebration of yet another anniversary. April 2017 marks the 110th birthday of Helēna Tangijeva-Birzniece – legendary ballerina, ballet master, instructor and producer of this ballet.
