John Adams' Shaker Loops and Joseph Haydn's La passione

24 Nov
American minimalist John Adams' legendary piece Shaker Loops was inspired in equal parts by the perpetual rippling of water and the memories of the Christian religious group known as shakers and their ecstatic worship rituals. Similar wild bursts of energy promises to be scattered through the new work of freethinker Platons Buravickis - Aesthetics of Disassembly. On the other hand, the Viennese classic Joseph Haydn's symphony La passione and Finnish contemporary composer Kaija Saariaho's Graal théâtre, with its sublimely drawn contrast between eternal and ephemeral, might be defined as sacral works. The concert's soloist – violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky – has a broad emotional range, capturing the audiences with innate poignancy and unconstrained musicality.

Les Voix Humaines (consort of viols, Canada). International Bach Chamber Music Festival

24 Nov
Their musical complicity has been compared to the skill of two trapeze artists or the telepathic communion of a pair of jazz saxophonists! Susie Napper and Margaret Little, the two gambists of Les Voix humaines, have been thrilling audiences worldwide with dashing performances of early and contemporary music for viols since 1985. They are renowned for their spectacular arrangements of a wide variety of music for two viols and have become a world reference for the music of Sainte-Colombe. Third member Mélisande Corriveau is as distinguished a performer on the baroque cello and recorder as on the viola da gamba. The ladies are joined by cellist and viola da gambist Felix Deak. Programme: J.S.Bach Art of the Fugue.

European Christmas. A concert performance Novecento

15 Dec
The same world-famous Italian author and philosopher Alessandro Baricco (1958) who studies glass castles, silk and Homer, during his early years has much though about music and even wrote books about it. Baricco is erudite, rather provocative and even a bit quarrelsome. He loves tangled ideas and always tries to purify the objects that he is studying from trivial assumptions.

European Christmas. Mendelssohn's Overture and Mozart's Prague Symphony

16 Dec
This is the third meeting of Sinfonietta Riga and the exuberant German Christoph Poppen; the brilliant violinist, also a gifted pedagogue, lately more often has been seen with a conductor's baton, performing with orchestras from Europe, the US and Asia. His belief in music's power to make the world a better place perfectly suits the spirit of the Christmas season as well as this program, which includes Mendelssohn's dreamy portrait of the beautiful Melusine, Mozart's effervescent Prague Symphony and Rodrigo's Concierto Pastoral, written for the “Irishman with the golden flute" James Galway. Coincidentally, Galway is one of the masters with whom the Latvian flutist Dita Krenberga, the concert's soloist, once studied.

European Christmas. Sergejs Jēgers. Ave Maria

Ave Maria through the ages and through the eyes of composers of different times and ethnicities. And alongside these the second day of Christmas are filled with the sounds of baroque arias and instrumental opuses, Christmas chorales and traditional melodies. Sergejs Jēgers’ warm and gentle voice is interlaced with the grand sounds of the Riga Cathedral organ played by Diāna Jaunzeme-Portnaja, and sounds of string instruments...
