Cat House

Cat+House
On Līvu Square, two wrought-iron cats stand on the corner towers of a building facing the Great Guild, backs arched and tails poised as if ready to leap. Thanks to these figures, the building was named the Cat House which once had a scandalous fame which took it even to a lawsuit. Today, the cats live not only on top of the building, but also - on the ground floor.

The building was erected in 1909 according to a design by architect Friedrich Schefel, who was an Art Nouveau pioneer in Riga together with his contemporary Heinrich Scheel. The owner of the building was a wealthy Latvian trader who was not accepted to the Great Guild. He was so offended that put cats on top of his building, with their tails poised towards the Great Guild and signalling about what their owner thinks about the association of traders. The Medieval-style Cat House features Art Nouveau characteristics and brings fun, romance and also sarcasm to the city. Now the ground floor houses the "Black Cat" Club whose motto is "Let life love you!". Here you can have a meal and/or listen to the jingling of tokens in slot machines. The building also holds the "Carpe Diem" Jazz Restaurant and several offices.
