House of Dannenstern

House+of+Dannenstern
The House of Dannenstern is one of the most impressive examples of the Baroque style architecture in Latvia testifying to the 17th century merchants' wish of public showcasing their prosperity. The building was constructed according to Dutch Classicism pupular in the Northern Europe at that time; plenty of ornaments harmonizing with the restrained facade - typical features of Riga Baroque.

The House of Dannenstern was was built in 1696. It belonged to a rich merchant from Holland, Ernest Metsu, who owned more than 150 ships and was granted the title: “von Dannenstern” by the King of Sweden. However, rumours had it that he had bought the title. The building was constructed according to the design of the 17th century Riga architect Rupert Bindenschu, who liked to combine two supposedly incongruous elements in his projects. The House features classical and restrained architecture; however, at a closer look, you'll notice female figures lounging on both sides of the pediment reminding of pop-singer Janet Jackson's legendary performance with accidentally denuded breast at the break of the Super Bowl match. Have a proper look at the building since there are so many details!
