LETA
You will find an interesting monument - a bronze man and lady with a chow chow dog, in a park in front of the Latvian National Opera. It is dedicated to George Armitstead, Mayor of Riga from 1901 to 1912, who entered Latvian history as one of the greatest leaders Riga has ever known. The monument was created by donations from local businessman Yevgeny Gomberg and unveiled by British Queen Elizabeth II in October 2006.

Armitstead was born on 28 February 1824 at Riga, the second son of an English merchant living in Latvia. Studied in Zurich and Oxford, became Mayor of Riga in 1901. During his leadership, Riga saw wide construction and improvement, as well as searching for solutions to social problems. Special focus on education - Riga gained 16 new schools. The first tram line was opened, the building of the Latvian National Theatre was constructed, three pavilions set up at the Vidzemes Market, a water-pipe system was developed, the Riga Zoo established, etc, etc. Armitstead did an outstanding job as mayor, and one can say for sure that Riga would be completely different if not for this Englishman.
