On 18 November 1918, Independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed in the Latvian National Theatre. Now this is a public holiday, public institutions and many private companies are closed, and there are multiple events all day long.

The Latvian state was born on November 18. Although its borders were not marked yet, a group of determined nationalists declared the Independence of Latvia in 1918. Battles were still going on for next few months since the Russian Empire did not want to give up this territory. November 18 is still the most significant day for Latvians.

On November 18, celebration and various events go on all day long. In Riga, the day starts with a parade and laying of flowers at the Monument of Freedom. The event is attended by the President of Latvia and other officials.

In the afternoon, the National Armed Forces parade is held on 11th November Embankment, followed by fireworks over the Daugava River in the evening.
