Esplanāde Park features a monument to Russian Field Marshall Barclay de Tolly (1761-1818), a copy of the now lost 1913 sculpture.

Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly was a Russian Field Marshall and Minister of War during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and subsequent campaigns of the Russian army in Europe. He was closely related to Riga as his grandfather, Wilhelm Barclay de Tolly, had been Mayor of Riga.

The first monument to de Tolly in Riga was set up in 1913. However, it stayed there only for two years as during World War I, when the front line was approaching, the bronze figure was evacuated. Unfortunately, the ship with the sculpture was attacked and it sank.

In 2001, a new monument was created by the initiative and by donations of local businessman J.Grombergs. In 2001 it was set up on the historic pedestal, made of red granite from Finland.
