Latvian Maritime Academy (LMA) was founded on 1 October 1989; it is the first and only marine-oriented institution of the higher education in Latvia. LMA follows marine education traditions since the first Nautical School was opened in Riga in 1789 and closed in 1820.

The quality of the accredited maritime studies at LMA is recognised at the national and international levels. LMA graduates have well-paid job offers and there is an increasing demand for maritime professionals both on the Latvian and international markets. Today the academy has more than 800 students, a third of them in part-time study programmes. Every year LMA enrolls around 150 students, most of them study marine navigation and engineering. The programme of Port and Shipping Management is highly popular. The academy features a small number of navigation officers and marine electric automation students, enrollment is according to demand and concluded agreements.

LMA is involved in the Erasmus exchange programme and offers international students a broad range of courses in English from the Marine Transport Department, Marine Engineering Department, general courses, and marine English. Application for the autumn term is open to 1 June, for the spring term - to 1 November. Non-European students can choose among several Bachelor and Master degree programmes. The Bachelor's programme is four years and three months, while the Master's programme - 1.5 years (full-time studies) or 3 years (part-time studies). This year eight foreign students study at LMA - two from Poland, two from Turkey, three from Spain and one from Azerbaijan. This year also saw the launching of a new tradition - the international evening "mixer" - Cocktail of Countries, to highlight the variety of students learning under one roof.
