Subtly carved wood patterns, graceful towers and romantic porches are the most characteristic elements of Riga's wooden architecture - part of its historic cultural heritage which has become well-known all over Europe. The proud wooden homes of Pārdaugava, clustered building of the Maskavas district, romantic wooden structures of Grīzeņkalns and fishermen's houses of Ķīpsala all tell the story of the history of Riga and the intertwining of its inhabitants and memories. The wooden buildings still standing today date back to the 19th century.
