The world's most expensive coffee - Luwak, processed by the Asian Palm civet, can now be purchased in Riga, available for 8.80 LVL/ a cup.

The Coffee Luwak (Kopi luwak) hails from Sumatra, Java, Bali and other Indonesian archipelago islands, as well as the Philippines. The "Upe" shop (26 Vaļņu street, Riga) offers coffee from Bali.

The price in Riga is 8.80 LVL/ a cup, which is less expensive than Moscow (20 LVL) and Madrid (10.50 LVL).

The Asian Palm civet is responsible for the effects of this unique coffee. Ripe coffee cherries pass through its digestive tract and later are processed by coffee makers.

In the animal's stomach proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more free amino acids. After passing through a civet's intestines the beans are defecated, keeping their shape, then gathered, washed, sun dried, lightly roasted and brewed.

"Costing hundreds of dollars a pound, these beans are found in the droppings of the civet, a nocturnal, furry, long-tailed catlike animal. Only after they have been fermented in the animal’s stomach acids and enzymes to produce a brew described as smooth, chocolaty and devoid of any bitter aftertaste," according to The New York Times.
