During this year's Riga Festival, the world's most prestigious aerobatic competition, "Elite Aerobatic Formula", will for the first time be held in Latvia. The competition will continue for three days, August 18 through August 20, after which Rigans and guests of the city will be offered a special aerobatics program on August 21.

FAI EAF (The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Elite Aerobatic Formula) is a top-level aerobatic competition, often dubbed "Formula 1 in the sky". Only the world's best pilots in the "Unlimited" category may participate in the competition. The flights, which will take place over the Daugava River in Riga downtown, between Salu Bridge and Dienvidu Bridge, will be an unforgettable experience for the spectators.

In Riga, the pilots will compete in two categories: "Aerobatics Against Time" (AAT) and "Freestyle". In the AAT part, pilots will have to perform certain manoeuvres in the air within three minutes, and their performance will be judged by speed and precision of the performance. In the "Freestyle" part, they will be given four minutes to show their best moves, including completely unique manoeuvres.

Past winners of the competition and internationally acclaimed pilots will take part in Riga FAI event: Spain's Castor Fantoba and Russia's Svetlana Kapanina, the sole female participant in the competition. The other pilots who will participate in the competition are Nicolas Ivanoff of France, Mikhail Mamistov of Russia, Jeff Borerboon of the United States, Sami Kontio of Finland, Martin Sonka of the Czech Republic, Tom Cassells of Great Britain. A few more pilots may confirm their participation in the competition in the near future. Altogether, there are only 15 pilots in the entire world who may participate in the competition, and most of them will be in Latvia for the Riga FAI event.
