Mērsrags is a former fishing village on the coast of the Gulf of Riga. Today, fish processing still remains the key industry of the township. In the summer, Mērsrags is popular with tourists and the venue for several events.

The earliest information about Mērsrags is from the 15th century when it used to be a small fishing village. There are several stories and myths about Mērsrags, one of these is that sea pirates lived there and attacked nearly all ships passing by. Today, Mērsrags is home to several fish processing companies and an important cultural area. Mērsrags is the centre of Mērsrags Region.

The sea is the main source of income for Mērsrags - Mērsrags Port lies in the very heart of the town, it is the second largest of Latvia's small ports. Mērsrags Port is bustling with industrial activity. The traditional businesses, such as fishing, fish processing and wood processing, have been lately joined by new ones, mostly trade and services; transit business is becoming an increasingly important part of the port's operations.

In the territory of Mērsrags, there is a kindergarten, a high school, two general practices, a dentist's, a pharmacy, a post office, a library, several recreational areas, a hairdresser's, a filling station, several cafes and stores.
