A special box will be available at the Town Hall Square until August 21 for any person to leave his or her unwand keys in it. During the Riga Festival on August 21, the box and the keys therein will be taken to the Daugava Embankment at 11 a.m., where metalsmith Kārlis Alainis will melt the keys in a special furnace into a large and beautiful Riga City Key.
The making of the new key will continue all day, and it is planned that the key will be presented to Rigans and other participants in the Riga Festival in a special ceremony at around 10 p.m.
Information about the location of the genuine Riga City Key is contradictory, some sources inform that the key has been hidden somewhere in Russia's archives, others say that the key must be someplace in Sweden, which is why this year, celebrating the 810th anniversary of Riga, residents and guests of the city will have a chance to make a new city key, pledging their love and support for Riga.
