In Twilight of the Gods, the essential conflict between the longing for love and the greed for power - which Wagner developed and deepened during the course of the Ring's previous operas Das Rheingold, Die Walküre and Siegfried - comes to a shattering culmination. The hero Siegfried unknowingly betrays his bride Brünnhilde. She swears vengeance - and sets off a chain of tragic events that brings the world to an end.
For the new production, the LNO brings together one of the most promising conductors of the new generation Cornelius Meister (Germany) and film & theatre director Viesturs Kairišs (Latvia). Meister made his LNO debut in 2008 with the internationally-acclaimed production of Wagner's Siegfried, directed by Kairišs.
Playing the title role will be Lars Cleveman (tenor, Sweden) who has performed at the main opera houses in Scandinavia and Europe. He has already appeared as Siegfried in the production of Wagner's Siegfried by Robert Wilson (USA). Catherine Foster (soprano, UK) will perform the role of Brünhilde. More recently her success has included all three Brünnhildes in Der Ring des Nibelungen, performing them in such houses as Hamburg, Budapest, Aalto theater Essen and Weimar, and now also in Riga.
Set and costume design by Ieva Jurjāne.
