Imants Kalniņš, one of the most popular Latvian composers, is celebrating his 70th anniversary in 2011. To pay tribute to the composer, the National Opera stages a concert performance of the composer's first opera that is immensely popular with Latvian audiences, "I Played, I Danced".
Manga opera "WAR SUM UP", a collaboration between Hotel Pro Forma (Denmark) and Latvian State Radio Choir, has already premiered at the National Opera.
Ballet "4 Worlds. 4 Elements" will also premiere at the opera this season, with the Latvian National Ballet company taking you along to a variety of worlds abounding in emotions, colour, elements, and beauty.
The premiere of Richard Wagner's "Twilight of the Gods", directed by Viesturs Kairišs, is scheduled for November 19. Prominent German conductor Cornelius Meister, who debuted at the Latvian National Opera conducting Viesturs Kairišs' interpretation of Richard Wagner's "Siegfried" that was met with enormous international acclaim, is the music director and conductor of the new production. "Twilight of the Gods" is the second collaboration between the Latvian film and theatre director and the German conductor at the National Opera.
Another premiere due January 28, 2012 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "Mazepa", staged in co-operation with Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
Giacomo Puccini's "La Boheme", staged by Pēteris Krilovs, will premiere on February 17, 2012.
Whereas April 20, 2012 will see the premiere of Ludwig Minkus's "La Bayadere", which is the first production of "La Bayadere" on the stage of the National Opera.
Concluding the season, Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor", directed by Andrejs Žagars, will premiere at the National Opera on May 24.
