Count Almaviva enlists the help of the witty barber Figaro to come up with and ingenious plan to meet Rosina, the girl he loves. Doctor Bartolo, Rosina's ward, keeps her confined in his house, and Almaviva and Figaro have to overcome many obstacles until the Count wins his beloved.
The first performance of the opera in the 19th century was a disastrous failure, the audience hissed and jeered throughout, and several on-stage accidents occurred. It has since become one of the most popular musical comedies of all time, featuring witty characters, farcical plot twists and a happy ending.
Director of the performance Aik Karapetian says: "I am interested in bright contrasts and contradictions, which is why I chose the French Revolution as a background for telling Beaumarchais' story. The play by Beaumarchais was one of the first works at the time to criticise aristocracy, and that is why it is seen as a source of inspiration for the supporters of the idea of the French Revolution (the play was banned in several countries). The splendours and miseries of aristocracy are portrayed in an absurd and comical light. Black humour makes it possible to give the melodrama a much darker tone."
