Easter

Easter
The Ethnographic Open Air Museum offers the opportunity to return to ancient Latvian festive traditions and celebrate Easter. It is the time when the day becomes longer than the night - spring sets in.

The time when the Sun has climbed the celestial mountain so high that daytime and night-time are of equal length, is called the spring equinox or Easter. On this day, nature and people celebrate the victory of light over darkness - solar festivities.

As the spring equinox approaches, and the day finally becomes longer than the night, according to Latvian traditions, we will hang and decorate the traditional Easter swings, sway, sing, dye eggs with onion skins, conjure, swat each other with willow catkins, play games, dance, glorify the Sun, and promote liveliness, health and beauty all around us.
