"Ars Viva 2010/11", the prestigious German contemporary art award, draws attention to language and its different aspects in contemporary art.

Rigans and city guests have the wonderful opportunity to visit the exhibition Ars Viva 2011/12 here in Riga. Riga Art Space is one of the three partners organizing the exhibition of the award-winning works. The winners of "Ars Viva 2010/11 – Language" are Jurgen Staack, Philipp Goldbach and Erik Bunger.

Since the historical avant-gard movement of the 20th century, language has been a fundamental subject in the interpretation of art. The works of all three artists feature a common element, namely, language as a performance.

From this perspective, everything is language, let it be music, painting, or architecture.

Erik Bünger, Philipp Goldbach, and Juergen Staack have their individual approaches to language and they exercise them by searching the possibilities of language in visual arts, studying the social role of language, and challenging the limits of visuality.
