Extensive cultural programme planned for Lacplesis Day in Riga

A large number of commemorative events and an extensive cultural programme is planned for November 11 Lacplesis Day in Riga, including a torch procession, concerts, dance performances, film screenings, and patriotic activities for young people.

On the eve of Lacplesis Day, November 10, documentary film “Gvido Zvaigzne” will premiere at cinema “K Suns” at 7 p.m. Also at 7 p.m. in the Large Hall of the University of Latvia – choir music concert dedicated to the 60th anniversary of composer Mārtiņš Brauns with the participation of Mārtiņš Brauns, soloist Niks Matvejevs, Riga chamber choir “Ave Sol”. Conductor Uldis Kokars, director Uģis Brikmanis. Tickets: LVL 3 to LVL 5, the tickets are available at “Biļešu paradīze” ticket outlets.

November 11 at 9 a.m. – ecumenical service at the Riga Cathedral. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Andrejsala Island at 8a Andrejostas Street – a patriotic adventure game for youth, "Riga Chronicles 11.11.11", featuring lectures on arms and armour, discipline training, firing range practices, communication and encrypting, bonfires and singing of popular marching songs. Participants aged 14 to 19 are welcome to sign up until November 6 at the website www.rigashronikas.lv.

A wreath laying ceremony in the Riga Brethren Ceremony is due 11 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., a flag painting workshop at Riga Porcelain Museum. Admission free of charge, materials cost LVL 1.51.

Event “November 11 with Contemporary Eyes” from 12 noon to 4 p.m. in Zakusala. Exhibition of arms and armament replicas, a quiz on the War of Independence, screening of the film “Bermontiāde”, re-enactments of several War of Independence battles. More information at: www.pelekaisvilks.lv.

Riga Garrison units military parade at the Freedom Monument at 1 p.m. The Change of the Guard ceremony at the Riga Castle at 2 p.m. At 2:40 p.m., flower-laying ceremony at the Oskars Kalpaks Monument. A commemorative event in memory of the War of Independence heroes at 3:30 p.m. at Sudrabkalniņš, on the intersection of Slokas Street and Kurzemes Street.
Screening of the film “Vienīgā fotogrāfija” (The Only Photograph) at the Small Guild at 5 p.m., featuring a meeting with the film director Brigita Eglīte.

Event “Spirit of Freedom Fighters Through Centuries” at 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., including a torch procession from Riga Brethren Cemetery to Daugava Embankment, with stops at Oskars Kalpaks Monument, Freedom Monument, Riflemen Square. Concert at the Riflemen Square: men’s choir “Vilki”, folklore ensemble “Skandinieki”, historical re-enactment and folklore group “Vilkači”, rock band “Skyforger”. Ancient and contemporary martial arts demonstrations. Launch of a floating bonfire in the Daugava, hot tea and bonfires. A singsong event at the Riga Castle at 9:30 p.m.

Concert “Peaceful Night at the Daugava” from 6 p.m.to 10 p.m. in Anglican Church: performance by organist Jānis Pelše at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. - Ilze Grunte, Andris Grunte and Haralds Sīmanis, 8:30 p.m. – chamber choir “Austrums” and mixed choir “Sōla”, 9:30 p.m. – organist Jānis Pelše.

VEF Culture Centre men’s choir conducted by Vilnis Salaks and singer Daina Dombrovska in concert at Riga Culture Centre “Iļģuciems” at 6 p.m.
Riga 1st Classical School girls’ choir “Sapnis”, New Riga Men’s Choir and Brass Band, Latvian National Opera soloists Sonora Vaice and Raimonds Bramanis in concert at St. Peter’s Church at 6:30 p.m.

Folkdance and folk music club “Liesma” ensembles perform at VEC Culture Centre’s Main Hall at 7 p.m. Tickets for a donation can be received at the club “Liesma at 70 Brivibas Street or one hour before the concert at the VEF Culture Centre.

Boys and men’s choirs from Riga and Latvian regions in concert “Soldier Songs” at Riga Latvian Society House’s Main Hall at 7 p.m. Artistic director and chief conductor Edgars Račevskis.
