Set of Nobel Prize banquet tableware on display at the Art Museum Riga Bourse

Swedish Ambassador to Latvia Mats Staffansson presented a set of Nobel Prize banquet tableware to the Art Museum Riga Bourse on December 8. The gift will now be displayed in the museum's permanent exhibition.

The special Nobel tableware set was created for the 90th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in 1991 by the leading Swedish designers. Karin Björquist is the designer of the porcelain dishes.

The colours of the dishes symbolises the four seasons, the continents of Earth and the first Nobel Prize, they were produced by the Rörstrand porcelain factory. Gunnar Cyrén designed the glasses and cutlery. Glasses for red wine, white wine and champagne were made in Orrefors glass factory, while cutlery in Genses factory. The tablecloth was designed by textile designer Ingrid Dessau and made by Klässbols linen factory.

Every year on December 10 after the award ceremony in Sweden, a banquet is held at the Stockholm City Hall, which is one of the greatest banquets in the world. 1,300 guests were invited to the banquet for the 90th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in 1991, which was held by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden. 65 tables were covered with approximately 470 metres of linen cloth and the meticulous table setting of thousands of porcelain dishes, glasses and silverware items.
