The annual exhibition of knitted and crocheted objects shows off the skills of traditional knitters in Latvia. The exhibits show objects made using various techniques, replicas of ethnographic mittens and socks, as well as presents modern solutions for knitting and crocheting.
The mittens displayed at the exhibition bear symbols of the regions they represent, as well as individual patterns invented by the knitters. Mittens that are among the richest in colour and pattern come from Kurzeme, especially Rucava and Alsunga.
Also displayed will be knitted bracelets that were popular all over Latvia at the beginning of the 20th century; again, the brightest colours come from Kurzeme province. Knitted bracelets are making a comeback, because they are not only practical but also fashionable. There will also be knitted and crocheted blankets, socks of various lengths and sizes, and others.
Knitting is one of the most ancient cloth-making techniques that has not only practical but also decorative purposes.
