Riga Zoo is home to several thousand animals, insects and birds of over 400 species altogether. It might take an entire day to name them all!
All summer, visitors are invited to participate in public feeding of animals - each workday around noon, visitors can see how keepers feed animals, frequently asking them to do a trick for the audience. Riga Zoo reminds though that visitors are not allowed to feed animals.
Riga Zoo is a great place to spend a summer day - walk around the extensive territory of the zoo, have a rest at special sites for picnics, meet the inhabitants of the zoo, and have a great time all day. Children will be very excited to visit the Farmstead, where they can scratch a pig, stroke sheep, feed a goat or hear a real cock-a-doodle-doo.
The lush Tropical House is home to various amphibians, snakes and other jungle animals. Nearby is the Lemurs' House, which is highly popular with all zoo visitors, especially the fans of the "Madagascar" animated film. Furthermore, a baby was born in the lemur family in the spring of 2011!
There is also a separate area for birds - the majestic eagles and various waterfowl, the ornate pheasants and the noisy parrots. You may even meet a snowy owl or a horned owl!
