Fields, crops, potatoes, as well as peas and beans are in full bloom - the Līgo! celebration has arrived - the time when everything is in bloom. This year, the Baltica festival calls on people to think about Līgo! traditions - pinning flower and oak crowns, singing traditional songs, eating caraway seed cheese, drinking beer etc., in every region, county, village, farmstead or home, as well as internationally. Persons are also invited to remember about flower growing and giving traditions, as well as other summertime songs and rituals.
The international Baltica festival is an important event on the cultural calendar for the people of the Baltics, which demonstrates traditional cultural values - folk dance, folk music, customs, handicraft and other fields of folk art in their historical forms. Participating in the festival are ethnographic ensembles, folklore troupes, musical collectives, storytellers and other individual folklore performers. The first Baltica festival to be held in Latvia took place in 1988, helping to give an emotional jolt to the national independence movement of the time.
