10 reasons to visit Riga in summer

Capacious parks, wide sandy beaches, a vibrant dining scene and reserved, but friendly locals – Riga is the perfect summer 2020 destination.

Picnic in the park

Riga’s leafy parks are perfect for throwing a picnic – the wide Kronvalda park, the quiet Viestura Garden, the buzzing Vermanes garden and more. A great many cafés offer picnic-friendly take-away meals, for instance, Terra, Bowl 31, Mr Fox, The Hub Café. But you can also order from the fast deliverers of Wolt and Bolt Food.

Hit the beach

Riga may not strike as a beach holiday destination at first, but a brief drive away from the city center lies spacious white sand beaches – Vecāķi on the East and Bolderāja, Daugavgrīva on the West; let alone the urban beaches right at heart of the city - Ķīpsala and Lucavsala. Besides Jūrmala, the legendary resort city is just a short train ride away.

Get a double scoop

While wandering the mercifully free alleys of the Old Town, take an icy pit-stop at Gelato Italia Riga. The café makes a wide assortment of gelatos – have it in a cone, a cup, or as a cookie sandwich. Grab a scoop and head to the nearby promenade along the Daugava River.

Alfresco dining

The city is not short on charming terraces where to bask in the sun whilst enjoying a meal or an aperitif. Nab a table under the spectacular oak trees at Pagalms or enjoy sundown together with the city’s cool kids on the terrace of Vest bar.

Cold-brew

The best thing about spending summer in the city? You can find o a refreshing ice-cold latte on every corner. Enjoy an exquisite cold brew of the local roasters – Andrito Coffee, Rocket Bean and Kalve at such coffee parlors as Mitt, Kalve Espresso Room, Rocket Bean Roastery and more.

A sunset at Andrejosta

Ask any local and they will tell you that the best place for catching a magnificent sunset is Andrejosta. This industrially charming and tranquil port area is located within a 10-minute walk from Old Town. It’s also home to many restaurants and pop-up event venue Andrejostas kvartals, that host music and street food inflected events during the summertime.

Sup on cocktails

Riga is having a moment in cocktail-making. Enjoy the creations of the native mixologists at the verdant rooftop bar Herbārijs, the gilded XIII in the Art Nouveau district, the intimate speakeasy Bar Six and Gimlet Nordic Cocktail Bar which makes the most of locally sourced ingredients. Cin-cin!

Street food – one of the best in Europe

During the warm months Riga becomes obsessed with street food. Head to the hip Tallinn street courtyard where Street Food Latvia headquarters Angārs resides. From veggie burgers to Mexican street food, however, do feel obliged to try bao bun from Bowl’s & Bao as it won the title for the Best Sandwich at the European Street Food awards 2019.

Sail away

Go to Andrejsala, rent a kayak or hop on a SUP board and experience Riga from a different point of view. Slide through the winding canals of the city center or sail the tremendous River Daugava. For more uniqueness go in the evening, to enjoy a sunset on the waters and the gleaming lights that adorn the numerous bridges looming over the canals. Rent the equipment from Rīgas Laivas.
