A performance of Karlsons’s Dances of Life and Death, which touches upon the courage and fate of Spanish national hero El Cid. The father and son piano duo will also perform the solo of Poulenc’s exciting Concerto for Two Pianos. Also on the program will be Stravinsky’s Petrushka, like a clown, struck by jealousy, who goes places he shouldn’t and does things he shouldn’t do. An evening of symphonic music with an equally symphonic ambit. All of this under the watchful eye of LNSO conductor Guntis Kuzma.

The story concerns the decline and fall of one Tom Rakewell, who deserts Anne Trulove for the delights of London in the company of Nick Shadow, who turns out to be the Devil. The opera that was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1951, was based loosely on the eight paintings and engravings A Rake’s Progress of the 18th century artist William Hogarth, which Stravinsky had seen in 1947 in a Chicago exhibition. At the Latvian National Opera, this opera will be staged for the first time.
