As Riga becomes the European Capital of Culture in 2014 and expects a major influx of tourists, it is necessary to arrange the work of tourist guides in Riga and increase the quality of tourism services. Visitors of the city should receive correct, comprehensive information about the events in Riga and its history, as well as architectural monuments and other points of interest – tourist guide services must be provided by professionals who improve their knowledge on a regular basis.
The binding regulations "On the Provision of Tourist Guide Services in the City of Riga", approved on 17 December 2013 by Riga City Council, provide that only people with appropriate education and certification will be allowed to work as tourist guides in Riga as of 1 April 2014.
In order not to restrict the rights of providing guiding services for people who have worked as tourist guides for years and are experts in their field, the binding regulations allow various opportunities to prove the professional qualification as a guide in the initial qualification. Further qualification of tourist guides, however, provides for obligatory requirements of increasing professional knowledge and skills. Guides will have to prove their suitability to service provision with documents that certify corresponding higher education and guide courses attended in a sufficient amount of hours or experience in the work as a tourist guide.
When and where is it possible to submit the documents?
The documents for certification can be submitted from 13 January 2014 at Riga Tourism Development Bureau at Kungu iela 3 on Tuesdays from 13:00 to 17:00.
