Certificate extension and renewal for Riga tour guides
In accordance with Riga City Council regulation Nr.91 “Tour guide services in Riga” (hereinafter – Regulation), the certification of Riga tour guides was launched on April 1, 2014. The certification of tour guides allow persons who have been granted this certification to provide tour guide services to persons in Riga for three years from the date the certificate was issued, which means that the first certificates will run out on March 31, 2017.
In order to extend the Riga tour guide certificate for another three years, tour guides must submit an application to extend their certificates to the Riga Tourism Development Bureau no later than one month before their certificates expire.
When submitting their applications, all Riga tour guides wishing to have their certificates extended must have a document confirming that they have continued to expand their knowledge about tourist objects in Riga, as well confirmation they have attended at least 20 academic hours a year improving their knowledge and skills as tour guides (altogether no less than 60 academic hours within the past three years).
In cases when the deadline to submit an application for the extension of certification has passed, Riga tour guides have the right to submit to the Riga Tourism Development Bureau an application requesting an extension of their certificates. The application must include the same documents mentioned before.
Tour guides who were granted their certificates after confirming their professional qualification in accordance with documents mentioned in Regulation Article 7.2 (a document confirming they have acquired the necessary curriculum from an accredited higher learning establishment, as well as a document confirming they have at least three years of experience working as a tour guide), and/or documents mentioned in Article 7.4 (a document confirming they have acquired the necessary curriculum from an accredited higher learning establishment, as well as a document confirming they have accumulated at least 120 academic hours in their field), must also have acquired a licensed professional qualification program for tour guides when they are submitting their application to extend their certificates.
The application must also include documents confirming that the tour guide has acquired a licensed professional qualification program for tour guides.
We would like to pay to your attention that according to Regulation, a licensed professional qualification program for tour guides is one which is licensed by the State Education Quality Service and makes up at least 160 hours.
If a tour guide has acquired the accredited higher education program for tour guides, which grants them their qualification, when submitting their extension for the Riga tour guide certificate, then it is not necessary to acquire another licensed tour guide professional qualification program.
Tour guides who were issued their Riga tour guide certificates based on documents submitted in Regulation Article 7.5 (documents proving they have acquired a secondary education, documents proving they have no less than ten years of experience working as a tour guide, as well as documents proving they have acquired no less than 120 academic hours in their field), must also acquire a licensed higher education program when they are submitting their application for their Riga tour guide certificates to be extended, or at least be currently enrolled in such a program. At the same time, they must also have acquired a licensed tour guide qualification program.
If a Riga tour guide has acquired an accredited higher education program, which grants him or her a tour guide qualification, then it is not necessary to acquire a licensed professional qualification program for tour guides.
If a Riga tour guide wishes to include an additional language in which they provide their tour guide services, the language must be included in the application to extend or renew their Riga tour guide certificate. The application must also include the necessary documents confirming their level of knowledge of that language.
The Riga tour guide certificate is extended from the day the previous certificate is no longer valid. If the certificate becomes invalid before the commission has made a decision on the extension of the Riga tour guide certificate, the certificate is extended beginning from the date the commission approves the extension.
The fee for the extension of the tour guide certificates is EUR 50, which can be paid by bank transfer after an invoice has been issued.
We kindly request that documents for the renewal or extension of Riga tour guide certificates be submitted to the Riga Tourism Development Bureau’s office at Kungu Street 3 in Riga from January 1, 2017 on Tuesdays between 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
