Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece Simon Boccanegra will be rehearsed for the first time at the Latvian National Opera under the direction of Normunds Vaičs. The standout team for the performance is from Great Britain: director Stephen Lawless, set and costume designer Leslie Travers and choreographer Lynne Hockney.
The main character of the opera wins the election as Doge of Genoa against the aristocrat Fiesco, but the two are not only connected by the power struggle, but also by a fateful woman. Verdi wrote Simon Boccanegra as early as 1857, but only the second version of this opera, which was first performed in 1881, gained popularity. In the 21st century, Verdi's masterpiece is being rehearsed more and more often on the opera stage.
