Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Church in Riga

The church of the holy Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky in Riga is a unique monument of wooden Orthodox church architecture of the first quarter of the XIX century and is one of the most beloved and cherished orthodox churches in Riga.

The church was built in 1825. Its author is unknown. Church's design was based on the so-called model project, which was probably adapted here in Riga by the architect Christian Friedrich Breitkreutz.

The classic-style building, a rotunda surrounded by columns, is made of wood, plastered and painted. In 1845, an extension was built on the second floor of the church for a baptismal and Sunday school. The free-standing stone belfry was constructed in 1863.

The church is located in the historic centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
