Under the leadership of new head coach Jānis Gailītis, the Latvian national team is preparing to continue its quest to qualify for the World Cup finals for the second time in a row.
In early July, the team has important games ahead in the 2027 World Cup qualifying tournament: on July 3, an away game in the Netherlands, and on July 6, a home game in Riga against the Austrian national team. The game against the Georgian national team - which reached the quarterfinals of "EuroBasket 2025" less than a year ago - will be a great opportunity for the players to rebuild their chemistry and test new strategies, while fans will have the chance to get to know and evaluate the team’s revamped lineup.
With the club season over, the national team now has access to all of Latvia’s top basketball players, meaning the squad will be stronger than in the first two match cycles.
Since the restoration of independence, the Latvian and Georgian national teams have faced each other 11 times, and so far the opponents hold the edge: Latvia has 5 wins, Georgia 6. The Latvians have come out on top in the last two games - an 82–57 victory in a friendly in 2023 and an 83–55 win in the Olympic qualifying tournament in 2024.
