In the summer of 2026, Latvia’s men’s and women’s national volleyball teams will face off against other strong European teams in the new European League format. This is not just a tournament - it is an opportunity to qualify for the 2028 European Championship as early as this year. The Latvian men’s team will face Romania on June 5 and Kosovo on June 7, while the women’s team will play Romania and Israel on those same days.
The men’s European League was first held in 2004, with the Czech Republic’s volleyball team emerging as the champions. The women’s European League was first held in 2009, with Serbia’s team becoming the inaugural champions.
The 2026 and 2027 European League competitions will also serve as qualifiers for the 2028 European Championship. Four spots in the European Championship final tournament for both men’s and women’s competitions will go to the hosts, four to the top teams from the 2026 European League, one spot to the 2026 European champions, four to the top teams from the 2027 European League, and 11 spots to the top-ranked European teams competing in the FIVB Nations League.
