Young Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen returns to the LNSO podium, bringing with him scores by two fascinating Finnish composers. In the Clarinet Concerto, the contemporary voice of Magnus Lindberg combines colourful harmony and orchestration with dizzying technical virtuosity of the clarinet and warm melodies, showcased in this concert by the LNSO principal clarinettist Mārtiņš Circenis.
Next, a symphonic poem by the early-twentieth-century modernist Väinö Raitio, inspired by an unusual dream. In the second part, the audience will be regaled with Beethoven’s Fifth – an opus that needs no commentary and yet astonishing anew each time with its magnificence.
