Amber Museum is one of Riga's most distinctive destinations, where science, art, and traditional craftsmanship come together across three floors.
Located in the heart of Old Riga, the museum takes visitors on a journey through the cultural and artistic history of amber — from fossils and insects preserved in amber for millions of years to exquisite jewellery and masterworks from the personal collection of Viļnis Zanders, known as the "Amber King."
The museum's collection spans thousands of years and multiple continents. Among the highlights are amber beads and pendant fragments from the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods (approx. 10,000–4,400 BCE) — among the oldest amber artefacts in existence — as well as pendant and bead fragments from the Roman period around 200 AD. The collection continues through the amber-working traditions of Prussia, Königsberg, and Poland, pieces connected to China's Ming Dynasty, and amber wares crafted right up to the present day. Engaging for all ages, "Amber Queen" offers a rare and thought-provoking window into the global significance of amber across the full span of human history.
A special highlight is a replica capturing the "taste" and "smell" of the legendary Amber Room — a nod to one of history's most celebrated and mysterious cultural treasures. The museum's shop offers authentic amber jewellery — a perfect place to find a genuine Baltic keepsake.
The museum is situated on one of the main streets running along the edge of the Old Town, easily reachable on foot from the Freedom Monument and the Latvian National Opera. The nearest public transport stops are at the National Theatre and Raiņa Boulevard, served by multiple tram, trolleybus, and bus routes.
