Staro Rīga is a multi-day exhibition of urban objects that uses modern light and video technologies to transform Riga into a spectacular open-air gallery. Taking place during Latvia’s independence celebrations in November, the festival illuminates buildings, parks and public spaces across the city.
Visitors can explore a variety of light installations, projections and interactive displays, most of which are located in central areas and are easily accessible on foot. The event creates a lively evening atmosphere, making it ideal for scenic walks, photography and experiencing Riga from a different perspective.
The theme of the Staro Rīga 2026 Light Festival is unum momentum – that one moment. A single moment that changes the world, whether the world around us or someone’s inner world. A moment when the next step is taken, when a choice is made.
At the heart of the festival’s theme is visual storytelling expressed through the language of light art. The artworks reflect on a significant moment, interpreting it through diverse forms, formats and genres of light art, as well as through multimedia and interdisciplinary approaches.
The festival route features light installations created by seven creative teams, works by emerging artists from the Art Academy of Latvia and the Latvian College of Culture of the Latvian Academy of Culture, as well as individual light art installations, all connected by the festival’s theme and route.
As the festival takes place outdoors, warm clothing is recommended, and popular spots can get busy, especially on weekends.
