Vidzeme Market resumes evening trading. The night market takes place every Wednesday from 6pm to 10pm.
At the night market one can buy seasonal vegetables, fruits and berries, plants and seedlings, various meat, fish, dairy and beekeeping products and other agricultural products from local farmers and domestic producers.
Vidzeme Market has been in operation since 1876. It was moved to its current location at the corner of Brīvības and Matīsa streets at the end of the 19th century. Vidzeme Market was the first in Riga to have well-appointed pavilions. They were opened in 1902. One of the pavilions, the first covered market hall in Riga, was dedicated to selling meat. The other, an open-air hall, was intended for other foods. The market buildings were designed by architect Reinhold Schmeling in an eclectic style with metal roofs. The long, spacious building is enlivened by playful gables.
