The sea has always been one of the most richly painted motifs in art – a source of solace, awe and the sheer power of nature.
The exhibition brings together a collection of paintings by Latvia’s leading seascape artists, uniting works by classic and contemporary painters and revealing this ever-changing element from different angles – from quiet coastlines to the drama of a storm, from the bustle of a harbour to the everyday life of a fisherman.
On display are works by Eduards Kalniņš, Herberts Siliņš, Jānis Ferdinands Tīdemanis, Aleksandrs Zviedris and others, tracing how the theme of the sea has evolved in Latvian painting over several decades.
