Performance "The Caucasian Chalk Circle"

Georgians believe that the first toast should always be to peace. They are a nation that inspires with its lust for life. The previous century facilitated extensive cultural exchange between us and this mysterious country of the Caucasus, making Georgian cuisine, wine and Pirosmani's naïve paintings an attraction for thousands of travellers. This play by Bertolt Brecht tells of war yet inspires life.

The king of the Kingdom of Sakartvelo is being overthrown, and maid Grusha undertakes to protect the abandoned infant heir to the throne. The child must be spared! Anyone would agree, whether a parent or not. However, any life also has to be weighed against death.

Latvian audiences first saw Brecht's play in the legendary Georgian director Robert Sturua's interpretation. Dailes Theatre is offering a new version created by Data Tavadze, a director whose name is renowned throughout Europe, composer Nika Pasuri, set designer Keti Nadibaidze from Georgia, and Latvian costume designer Kristīne Pasternaka.
