The Convent Courtyard is located in the oldest part of Riga and reflects layers of the city’s medieval history. Originally, this site was home to the castle of the Order of the Brothers of the Sword, built in the 13th century and destroyed later that same century. The name “Convent Courtyard” comes from the Convent of the Holy Spirit, which settled here in the 14th century and shaped the area’s development.

A historic courtyard today

Today, the courtyard has been transformed into a quiet and atmospheric space surrounded by historic buildings. With its cobblestones, archways and enclosed layout, it offers a glimpse into medieval Riga while providing a peaceful break from the busier streets nearby. Small workshops, museums and cultural spaces give the courtyard a creative character, making it an interesting spot to explore while walking through the Old Town.

Museums in the courtyard

The Riga Porcelain Museum is located here, offering insight into the city’s porcelain production traditions. On the Skārņu Street side, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design presents works by leading Latvian artists in decorative arts and design.

Why visit

The Convent Courtyard is one of the most atmospheric hidden corners of Old Town. Tucked away behind historic streets, it offers a peaceful escape from the busy city while still being close to major landmarks. Visitors can wander through narrow passages, quiet courtyards and centuries-old buildings, experiencing a more intimate side of Riga. The area combines history, architecture and culture, making it a rewarding stop during a walk through the Old Town.

Historical highlight

The Convent Courtyard is one of the oldest preserved areas in Riga, with origins dating back to the 13th century. The site was originally occupied by a castle of the Order of the Brothers of the Sword, which was later destroyed.

Over time, the area developed into a complex of interconnected buildings used for religious, residential and commercial purposes. Parts of the courtyard still rest on medieval foundations, and some of its structures are among the oldest surviving stone buildings in Riga. Today, it stands as a protected architectural monument, reflecting more than 800 years of the city’s history.

How to get there

The Convent Courtyard is located at Kalēju iela 9/11 in the centre of Old Town Riga, close to St. Peter’s Church and within a short walk of Town Hall Square and Dome Square. It is best reached on foot while exploring the Old Town, as the courtyard is hidden behind archways and narrow streets.
