European best destinations 2024 - Riga

St. Peter's Church is the highest church in Riga and one of the oldest and most notable sacred buildings of medieval monumental architecture in the Baltic States.

The Church was built in 1209.  Later it was several times rebuilt and enlarged. External walls of the current building's side areas and some of the interior pillars preserved from the 13th century. Inside the basilica, one can learn about the history of the building, as well as appreciate several original interior elements – tombs, restored stone and wooden memorial plaques, and the impressive giant bronze seven-branched candlestick made in 1596.

St. Peter's Church is located in the historic centre of Riga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here one can enjoy art exhibitions and concerts, as well as breathtaking views of the city from the church tower at the height of 57 metres – medieval and modern Riga, the Daugava River with its harbour and the Gulf of Riga.
